Superintendent’s Report to the Public

1. First, I would like to say a heart filled word of thanks to everyone who came to our aid after the tornado of April 7. Fifteen of our buildings/structures were damaged along with their contents. We are still in the process of getting repair estimate reports, but we are in the dry. Because of the community’s support, we did not miss any class time. It is extremely gratifying to once again experience what an outstanding spirit Haleyville has when faced with tribulation. I will not begin to name names for error of leaving someone out, but to all of you from all of us, Thank You!

2. Congratulations to McKenzie Middleton on being elected State Vice-President of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America student organization. McKenzie is a junior and will represent Haleyville High School and our Center of Technology on the FCCLA State Executive Council. Mrs. Denise Banks is our local club’s sponsor.

3. The Athletic Complex construction continues. We are in the finishing stages of the HVAC and electrical contracts and we are reading for the pouring of the outside sidewalks, the inside floor finishes, and the restroom/shower fixtures to be set. This is going to be a facility we will all be proud of. Donations are still appreciated for there will be a lot of furnishings needed.

4. Tuesday, May 9, the citizens of Winston County will be asked to consider renewing a 1-mill countywide tax for public school purposes. This a NOT A NEW TAX, but a continuation of the funding that has been provided for the education of our children since 1956. The County Commission has called for the election in accordance with state laws, the same as the election was called fifty years ago. All registered voters in Winston County will vote on this RENEWAL and it will benefit proportionately Winston County and Haleyville City school systems. The cost for an assessed home of fifty thousand dollars is only $5 per year; for a one hundred thousand dollar proper assessment, the out-of-pocket cost is just $10 per year. Again, this in NOT A NEW TAX. Your YES vote is respectfully requested on Tuesday, May 9 for the continued support of our local schools.

5. This Board met in a working session last Thursday, April 20 in the Albright Administrative Building. All members were present except Mr. Tidwell. We discussed the Athletic Complex project, the proposed Middle School project, anticipated personnel allocations, and discussed the system’s short and long-term goals and objectives. No action was taken.

6. The next regular session of the Haleyville City Board of Education is planned for May 23 with a working session prior to the meeting.
